I ran an Ethernet cable to my sound bar and fixed the problem. The MusicCast skills are intended to allow voice control of the most common, everyday functions rather than every feature available on every model. It can be helpful to know what you can and can’t do. For a complete list of currently available commands, see FAQs. It'll be just like your friend's Sonos setup - you'll need to connect a Chromecast audio device to each of the speakers that you wish to integrate with Google Home.
Just get a Chromecast Audio and connect it to the Receiver, will save you the headache. Yeah I remember having the same realization with my first setup. They finally add Google assistant but you still cant cast to the AVR nor can you add it to a cast audio group.

The infuriating thing is the first time I set this up it worked! I could tell Google "set input to Chromecast" or "turn on the Yamaha" and it would work. Something and it won't let me set the input by voice anymore, and I have no idea what it could be.

Google home adds the device but recognizing it as an actual stereo, louderspeaker, whatnot isnt happening. I've had Yamaha recievers for years and updated them several times. The current MusicCast UI is by far the best and visually pleasing. As with most Yamaha AV products MusicCast allows you to tweek the smallest of details.

Looking forward to some good automation ideas! Yamaha has done really great with continued support for prev gen stuff I gotta say. Through AirPlay 2, you can stream your music to multiple MusicCast devices throughout your home. This includes easy voice control with Siri from your favorite Apple iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad, HomePod and Mac. It’s recommended to put a little space between your Echo and your speaker or sound bar, and to place it where it can pick up your voice.
I've even tried setting it all up from scratch again and nothing. I worked around it by getting a chromecast, and an hdmi audio extractor, and connecting that to an input and setting that for zone 2 though. Start off using the default room names that come with the MusicCast Controller app. You may have to rename some rooms to make sure that none of your MusicCast devices have the same name.

Yeeez i thought it could find the system as with chromecast unit. I have 3 chromecast audios scattered around including one on my Yahama (sales tax on it was $27 btw). I agree that the embedded chromecasts are not as desirable with their lack of upgrading but I also can’t control input selection or zones with a cc either.

Finally updated my home theater setup with a new TV and receiver (Yamaha RX-V4A), and I was really excited about the prospect of using my Yamaha as an extension of my Google Home speaker setup. My mate has done something similar with Sonos but I am happy with Yamaha gear and like the idea of my existing bluetooth speakers playing nicely with the system. If you get a Chromecast audio you can make that an input on your am and make a group with other Chromecast speakers.

The smart speakers might be smart but they are not mind readers yet.
Works fine with Sonos so I'd assume the same would be true of any similar speaker. It is recommended that you use the default room names vs. customized room names in the MusicCast app, as the default room names may be more easily recognized. If the default room names conflict with the names of other smart devices in your home, it may be necessary to modify the names of the other devices. You can use your favorite voice assistant to control key functions of any MusicCast product. Discover a new, exciting way to control music and entertainment experiences in your home. As you can see in the table above, all your favorite MusicCast functions are available through Google Assistant. As an example, just say, “OK, Google, ask MusicCast to link the living room with the kitchen” and you’ll hear the same audio playing in the living room in your kitchen.
Just can't use it as if it were a speaker in my speaker groups etc. It's just a random device I can control with Google if that makes sense. Google home compatibility and casting are 2 different things.
