The children's plan almost succeeds, but the two police officers who had appeared earlier find them with the dummy full of drugs and arrest them. The officers put the three children in the back of their police car while they go to look inside the house. The house swallows the two police officers and the car with the children inside it . DJ, Chowder, and Jenny manage to get out of the car but find themselves trapped inside the house. The trio consults supernatural expert Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, who speculates the house must be a rare type of monster created by the fusion of a human's spirit and a man-made object that can only be unbound when its heart is struck. Ascertaining that the presumably-deceased Nebbercracker is the cause, the trio construct a dummy filled with cough syrup Chowder stole from a pharmacy owned by his father.

Calling the police, the youthful trio approach the house, thinking about the carnage waiting to happen that evening. The house tries to tempt Chowder with his basketball, but DJ and Jenny stop him from taking the bait. It is then that the cops show up; DJ, Chowder, and Jenny attempt to tell them about the nature of the house. However, they realize that the house knows better than to come alive when adults are present. Nebbercracker, when he was younger, was a member of a demolition squad in the US Army. He immediately fell in love with her, and felt bad for her when he saw that kids were picking on her due to her obesity.

DJ and Jenny climb up to the crane, while the house devours the excavator and chases Chowder; at the top, DJ is nervous about his next move, but Jenny encourages him, and they kiss.

This celebration is short-lived, however, as Constance's control over the house is still intact and she manages to reform it from its broken remains, resulting in a more horrific and monstrous form that proceeds to devour the excavator before chasing Chowder. Later on, when DJ and Chowder sought to investigate the house, Chowder, who doesn't believe strange things that occurred inside the house, starts to fool around on the house's lawn. They discovered Bones' empty bottle but dismissed it and toss it aside, unaware that the possessed grass on the lawn pulled it underground. Nebbercracker tries to comfort Constance and explains everything is for the best, but when she realizes his intent to destroy her with some dynamite, she attacks him. As Chowder combats Constance with an excavator from a nearby construction site, the trio then lure her into it. Swings out on a crane's hook with it, dropping it into the house's chimney and vanquishing Constance. Finally freed, her spirit briefly reunites with Nebbercracker before ascending to the afterlife and he then thanks the trio for freeing them from their suffering. They then explore the house, discovering Constance on her honeymoon with Nebbercracker, as well as Nebbercracker’s army days when he was part of a demolition team.

She's a sweet girl who studies at Westbrook Preparatory School and is selling candies at homes before Halloween kicks in. The day of Halloween, she meets DJ and Chowder after they save her from almost getting herself killed by the Monster House. After some convincing, Jenny, DJ and Chowder decide to get inside the sapient house no matter the circumstances to unveil the mystery on Halloween night.
In the aftermath, the quartet gather at the house's still-intact basement, returning everything Nebbercracker stole to their rightful owners. During the credits after everyone leaves, the house's victims emerge from the basement unharmed, including Bones, who discovers that Zee is now dating Skull. As the credits roll, the victims who were eaten by the house emerges from the hole. Bones finds out that Zee is now dating Skull, then Officer Landers and Officer Lister leave to "investigate" some of the trick-or-treating candy & the dog urinates on a nearby jack-o'-lantern enough to put out its flame. Walters documents his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, stealing a little girl's tricycle and scaring her away from his house, one of many similar incidents that have occurred. That same day, D.J.'s parents leave for a convention, placing him in the care of his teenage babysitter Elizabeth, or Zee. Later, D.J.'s friend, Charles "Chowder" Peterson, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn; D.J. He appears to suffer a heart attack and is presumed dead by the duo as he is taken away in an ambulance.
The house then grabs the cops' car and eats it, though DJ, Jenny, and Chowder manage to escape. Exploring the house, they find all the toys Nebbercracker confiscated from children in the basement along with a shrine containing the remains of Nebbercracker's deceased wife, Constance, which DJ opens using the key he found earlier. DJ accidentally falls on the remains, causing the house to become aware that they are inside.
While Chowder distracts the house, DJ and Jenny climb to the top of a crane, and DJ throws the dynamite into the chimney, causing the house to explode. The trio then see Nebbercracker with Constance's ghost before she ascends into the afterlife. DJ apologizes to Nebbercracker for his losses, but Nebbercracker thanks the kids for freeing him and his wife from being trapped for 45 years.
DJ arrives at the construction site where luxury tower apartment buildings are being built there, he finds Chowder in an excavator making stupid noises and he tells him to shut up. As they talk, Chowder accidentally starts the engine until DJ takes the keys out and says that he needs Chowder's help, which Chowder reluctantly agrees. As the medics put Nebbercracker's body on a carriage, she possesses grass on the lawn and tried to prevent them from leaving, but failed.
